Will Rogers was a humorist and another guy given credit for the quote. I am assuming that meant he was a funny guy. He gets the credit for the quote today so we can use him for our first impression of Jesus.
In one of Rogers’ quotes, he said:
"When I die, my epitaph, or whatever you call those signs on gravestones, is going to read: 'I joked about every prominent man of my time, but I never met a man I didn’t like.' I am so proud of that, I can hardly wait to die so it can be carved."
Have you ever considered that Jesus had a sense of humor? If he were talking to us today, do you realize he could have us all rolling on the floor? Or, to put it in terms we get, ‘roflmbo’. (‘b’ = butt, or backside).
Think about it – we are attracted to people who make us laugh. We are attracted to people who keep our attention. We are attracted to people who challenge us to be better.
Those who can help us look at ourselves, yet not take ‘US’ too seriously, but can take God, and our relationship with God, more seriously.
Jesus did that. And people kept coming.
And coming.
And coming.
In the end, Jesus took pride in dying so that we could all get to meet him and spend time with him one day.
When that happens, I think we will laugh together. I think we will smile together. I think we will find that we missed Jesus in who He really was…and is...and will be.
